Earlier this year, I’ve ventured into testing various AHA based products. As your skin ages it becomes more important to find ways to exfoliate beyond a simple sugar and lemon scrub. Fortunately, the break-out period of my life was so long ago that I haven’t had to worry about serums and acids for combination, acne or congestion prone skin in almost 20 years. I think that’s mainly due to diet and exercise. Now, I’m working on improving the texture and integrity of my skin into my 40’s. AHA’S like glycolic acid have been proven help shed the top layer of dull, damaged skin by loosening the glue-like substance that holds skin cells together.
What I like about Bliss Renew & Smooth is the lightness of the gel-like formula which makes putting it on a cool and calming sensation. Note: if you’re new to this serum and haven’t used glycolic acid in the past then you’re likely to also experience a bit of tingling. BTW, it’s annoying when the packaging on a product says “produce may tingle” but what they really mean is it’s going to feel like your face is burning off. Don’t fret, at worst, what you’ll experience with Bliss Renew & Smooth is just tingling. If this is your first time using a glycolic acid based serum, then you should move into this product gradually, i.e. once per week until your skin gets used to it.
Glycolic acid is THE holy grail for exfoliation. I used several different glycolic acid serums so going into experimenting with Bliss Renew & Smooth Night Serum, I knew exactly what to expect. I applied Bliss Renew & Smooth after washing my face and letting my skin dry completely. Then I applied the serum in the thin layer over my entire face and neck, avoiding my eye area and lips. I let the serum absorb and dry for a good 20 minutes before I applied my eye cream ( just to avoid the possibility that the two product might touch and cause an irritation) and then I lathered on a healthy layer of night time moisturizer. The next morning, my skin was noticeably clearer, smoother and even brighter.
It’s easy to take it for granted that most skincare and beauty products come free from Parabens, Phthalates, SLS, SLES and so forth but I do think it’s still important to acknowledge and include when a product is free of this chemicals. Bliss Renew & Smooth has none of the above and is also vegan and cruelty free. The shelf life of this serum is 12 months according to the packaging. You should also keep this product (like many of your skincare products) out of the sun to prevent the product from expiring sooner. So, don’t leave this product near your window.
Important Directions: The best time to use this serum is at night. Glycolic Acid make your skin super sensitive to the sun and therefore you may be more susceptible to sunburn. You should also be very careful when using this product along with retinoids as it can cause skin irritations.
To be honest, my #1 Glycolic acid is The Ordinary (which I’ll get into in another post) so I was doubtful that I would like another product but this serum definitely hold its own. Although it’s an AHA, the chemical profile of Bliss Renew & Smooth is different that The Ordinary’s Glycolic Acid Solution. In my book both have a place in my skincare routine.
